Title: "The role of the statistician in the different phases of the clinical trial"
Júlio Singer - University of São Paulo (USP, Brazil) - Moderator Production Engineer, with an MSc in Statistics from the University of São Paulo and a PhD in Biostatistics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a full professor of the Department of Statistics - IME, University of São Paulo and scientific vice director of the Center for Applied Statistics of the same institution. He is co-author of books and various articles on methodology and applications of Statistics. Among his current scientific interests are the development of methodology for analysis of mixed models and studies on the effect of pollution on health and the environment. João Branco - Instituto Superior Técnico - University of Lisbon (IST-UL, Portugal) Started his career as a research scientist at the Gulbenkian Foundation, but more than 40 years ago he embraced an academic career at IST. Since then he has taught Probability and Statistics to thousands of undergraduate and hundreds of graduate students. He contributed to the foundation of the Department of Mathematics at IST and he was also a founder member of the Center for Mathematics and its Applications (CEMAT) establishing and leading a research group in probability and statistics. He was for several years president of the Portuguese Statistical Society, and made major contributions to raising its profile and relevance. He is author or co-author of 3 books and of over 60 research papers in applied and theoretical statistics. He received an MSc in Applied Statistics from the University of Oxford and a PhD in Statistics from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Elsa Branco - Country Monitoring Head at Novartis Farma - Produtos Farmaceuticos S.A. (Novartis, Portugal) She has been working in the clinical research area of Novartis Farma Portugal since 2002, having previously collaborated with other pharmaceutical companies in the same area. Within the scope of this function, she is responsible for the activities related to the initiation, conduction and closure of international clinical trials of phases II, III and IV, ensuring the implementation of monitoring procedures in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), ICH and applicable legislation. Graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon, she began her professional career in the area of research at Instituto Superior Técnico and was a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon of the Biochemistry and Physiological Chemistry (1st and 2nd year respectively). Aurora Baluja - Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC, Espanha) Professor specializing in anesthesiology and resuscitation and PhD in medicine from the University of Santiago de Compostela. She obtained the contract for Research Training in Del Río Hortega (2011-2014) and currently works in clinical and research in Anesthesiology. In 2015, she obtained state funding from Carlos III Health Institute for an independent clinical trial in chronic pain. She participates in several research projects, with application of statistical techniques such as survival analysis and joint-modeling with the Research Group of Statistics, Computing, Medicine and Biology of the University of Santiago de Compostela. |
